With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the ability of machines to gather and store information faster and more effectively, make calculations, program themselves and learn independently, what will be the key skills and abilities that will be useful for children to take their place in the economies of the 21st century? In a way, what is the essence of humanity?

Even though we don’t have definitive answers to these questions, studies point to creativity and collaboration, motivation and self-direction as key skill categories. To be able to prepare children for the future, teachers will tend to be less “preachers” of a standard curricula and more coaches and facilitators who guide and encourage children to be constantly curious, deal with ambiguity and fulfil their highly diverse potentials using modern teaching methods and productive playful learning habitats. Effective learning is about improvisation and discovery and interacting with meaningful tools that expand mental capacities.

LEGO® Education has been creating playful learning solutions for kindergartens and classrooms for 30 years. The skills and techniques that the LEGO System for Learning embodies, meet many of the needs of 21st century learners. Their solutions enable students to be active, creative and collaborative solution-seekers.

With about 20 000 students in public schools and about 14 000 in private schools (includes pre-elementary, elementary and high school), Cascais is one of the municipalities with the highest density of children in Portugal. Not surprisingly, its municipal government has identified the area of education as a key priority to improve the quality of life of its residents and intends to provide leading edge facilities and programs aligned with the principles of 21st century learning referred above.

Having an established long-standing relationship with the accredited partners of LEGO® Education in Portugal, Urban Fabric is proposing the installation of a Learn & Play Studio in Cascais. The objective is to combine an easily accessible location, LEGO® Education learning solutions, well-designed operations and an exciting architecture to build a fundamental key-stone in the revitalization of Cascais’ historic center.
